Tips That Make Site Building Faster When Using Website Tonight®
Choosing a Template
There are many templates to choose from and it can get a little irritating choosing each template to view and then going back. So, here are some tips:
Decide if you want your links, or link list, on the left, across the top or on the right. Once you make the decision you can eliminate a lot of templates and this will save you time.
See the "I Love GoDaddy.com" box to the right? If you do not see one of these on the template previews they will most likely not be available for that particular template.
Look at the amount of room on each side of the website template. You will notice that some templates appear to have a lot of room on either side while others (like the site you are looking at) do not have a lot of room on each side. This is strictly my opinion, but I have to say I do not like the websites that have a lot of empty room on each side. Again, just my opinion.
Once you find a template you like you will have at least 6-7 color choices to choose from. If you do not like the colors you can go back and choose a different template.
All the pictures you see on the templates can be changed. Do not decide against a template because you do not like the picture. You can change it with one of your own, with a logo or with one of the many pictures Website Tonight® offers.
Use the Sharing Feature
Use Sharing! If you look at the top of my site you will see "Panaca Writing & Design, Specializing in Search Engine Optimization". When you look at a template everything is seperated in to boxes that you can edit. That area above was a box and the contact info on the right was a box. I have about 20 pages on this site, so to change this on every page could be time consuming; it is NOT without the sharing feature. Once you put the info you want in an areas and you want that same info on every page you click "OK" o exit the box and then click on "Sharing" if it is a new box you will need to creat a name for it, like "Business Name". Everytime you make a new page you go to that box, choose "Sharing" and then choose "Business Name" or what ever you named the box and then click "Insert Shared Content". This is fast and easy.
Advanced Edit or Quick Edit?
Anytime you choose a "box" to add information to you can choose "Quick Edit" or "Advanced Edit". There are positives and negatives to both.
With "Quick Edit" you can copy and paste something from a document and it will paste as is (with what ever formatting you had), but "Advanced Edit" will not paste as is. You will need to completely reformat when using advanced.
"Advanced Edit" allows you to easily format new information easily. It also allows you to add HTML easily. For Example, See the GoDaddy Box below? You can click on it and you will go to GoDaddy.com.
At the Bottom of the "Advanced Edit Box" you will see "Design" and "HTML". If you want to add an affiliate ad, or maybe a search bar search bar from your favorite search engine, you just finish typing what you want and then click on "HTML" (at the bottom of the page) and you add your HTML code. You can click "OK" and exit out to look at, but it is easier to just click on "Design" right next to the "HTML". It allows you to go right back where you were, so you can see what has changed and either edit or keep typing.
Pictures
As I stated before you can change any picture on your template, but in addition you do have some abilities to resize the pictures. I am not talking about something you could do in Photoshop, but you can resize a picture to fit in a header or elsewhere.
Your Template Stores Your Photos!
Once you upload your photos, which is as sample as chosing which folder the picture is in on your computer, the template places it in "My Images". This makes life much simpler for you, because sometimes you might delete somethings or update your site and by accident delete your picture. You can upload your images when you click on this icon . When you click on "Insert Image" there are threee tabs "Image Library", "My Images" and "Upload Image". The template's images and yours are right next to each other and it makes life much easier for the webmaster or website builder.
Page Properties Button/Tab
At the top of the page you are working on you will see a red "Page Properties" button/tab. It will be right next to "New Page". This is a very important area to tweak. The "Page Properties" will have several sections:
"The Browser Title" is the same as a page title or a title-tag. This is located at the very top of your website. If you look at the top of this page you will see that my "Browser Title" starts with "Building a Website...".
"The Heading Title" can either be blank or you can use it as a title to your page. There is an example below my link list and above the GoDaddy Domain Search box above, "Building a Website Through...". You do not have to use this or you can use it. You can always adjust/edit this particular area later on the web content page.
"The Button Title" is basically the name of your link, for example, "Home", "Contact", "Building a Website", etc. If you create a link title that looks too long on your main page you will need to access the "Page Properties" to fix it.
"The File Name" will generate itself and choose words, or parts of words, that are in your "Browser Title". You can change this and choose words that you think relate to the page you are making. You only have room for 80 characters and it is best to use an underscore "_" or hyphen "-" between words. As an example, the file name to this site is http://panacawriting.com/Building_a_Website_Through.html.
"The Meta-Tag Description" allows you to create a custom description for each page of your site. Keywords on your page should be included in your description.
"The Meta-Tag Keywords" should include the keywords from the content of your page.
